How I prepare for Placement

An important part of studying midwifery is of course the real deal: placement. Learning how to care for women and their baby's is something that you just can't study in a book; you have to learn to do it by doing it. But how do you prepare for placement? Here's what I do.

First of all I think that it's very important to know where you're going. Look at their website and try to get a good view of how they work and what their principles are. Also take a look at the amount of births they do each week or month to see what you're getting yourself into. If possible, give them a call and ask them if you can come a few days/weeks prior to your placement to meet the staff and to get to know the facility and ask your important questions.

The second thing that I do is knowing what my goals are. What does school want from me? What do I want to get out of this placement myself? What do I really (not) want to do this time? Getting this all straight gives you a clear perspective on what you are going to do. By having this you will be focused on the important things without wasting time on the unnecessary stuff.

Moreover, I like to start early by making lists. I take my bullet journal and create a page on this particular placement and make listst about what I need to bring, what I need to study before going, what I need to practise at school, etc. etc. By doing so I am sure that I won't forget anything and there will be no crises in that part.

Lastly, I take some "Lucky items". It sounds stupid but every time there is something significant that I'll be doing I take something with me that I believe brings me luck. One thing is that I Always have my "Lucky necklace" around my neck and my St. Christopher pendant in my pocket. It gives me strength and confidence and reminds me of how Lucky I am to be a student midwife.

I really hope you'll find these things as helpful as I do! What do you do to prepare for placement? Please leave a comment down below, I'd love to hear.
