Things you will need as a Student Midwife
Before you start your training to become a midwife, there are a few Essentials that I recommend you purchase.
The first thing is kind of Obvious but really: stack up on those blue and black pens. They're pretty much like hairties, they disappear into a black hole somewhere. Buy a lot, and if you thing you have enough, buy twice the amount. Trust me you're going to thank me later.
The second thing is a notebook with a hardcover. Some people prefer to use a laptop to take notes but I stick to the old paper notebook. You can write down your notes everywhere (even during a consultation) and it won't cost you a lot when it gets damaged during your placements or on your way to uni. The hardcover part is mostly necessary during your placements. By using a hardcovered notebook you can write down your notes neatly while standing or sitting without having to use something to put your notebook on. It will save you a lot of time and effort.
The third thing is something I Always carry with me during placements: an adress book. I don't use it to write down addresses or Phone numbers but to make my own little dictionary. If you buy the kind that only has a letter on the side of the paper and no text on the paper itself (Moleskine are the best!) you can use it to write down little things you have to keep looking up. For example, if you need to remember the criteria for Pre-eclampsia write it down on the page with the P. You'll need to remember a lot as a (student) midwife so start early and it will make you a very happy person.
The fourth thing I recommend are some extremely cheap shoes. You could choose to walk on a pair specifically designed to use in hospitals but they're usually extremely expensive and I honestly have to say that I hate them. Also, where I live we still do a fair amount of homebirths and hospital shoes outside a hospital look kind of (really) odd. So I prefer to wear a pair of fake allstars or flats. I think especially the flats look professional and if they get soaked in amniotic fluid or blood you can just throw them away. However, check with the guidelines of your hospital if that's okay, I don't want you to get in trouble.
The last thing is a powerbank for your Phone. You never know at what time of the day you'll be called to do a birth if you're not working in a hospital and you'll be in some pretty big trouble if your Phone's battery has just quit on you. Take a powerbank with you all the time and you will never be in the trouble of getting called and arriving too late for a birth or not being in the position to call an ambulance if need be.
I truly hope you find these tips helpful! If there's anything you recommend, leave them in the comments below. I would love to hear them!
